Short versus long run

Both the proponents and the opponents of immigration make arguments about the short run effects as well as the long run effects of immigration.

Generally speaking, opponents of immigration put more emphasis on the short run effects of immigration. An exception is those who worry about the crime rates of second-generation or third-generation “immigrants” (i.e., the children and grandchildren of immigrants).
